My God, what is a heart? My God, what is America? Emily Dickinson copied this poem's second and third stanzas and placed them as prayer or as autumn leaves in her collection of poems. The stanzas must have given her the courage to live, to write. We need the courage of our hearts today, November 5, 2024, and especially in the days that follow. No one is exempt from disappointment. We all suffer. Our goal must be to create strength and hope where it falters. Our communities need us. Education needs us. Poetry helps us in uncertain times. Herbert asks God twice, "What is a heart?" Let's join him now in our private spaces. Listen. There will be an answer.
